Nyati Lodge is totally remote and wonderfully unspoilt, and is without a doubt our prime destination in Mozambique. Offering excellent accommodation, great boats and professional fishing guides, the lodge boasts a huge variety of fishing opportunities, for absolutely every angling discipline.
It is situated on a long sand spit near the mouth of the San Sebastian lagoon, and looks over both the estuary and the surf. There is 80km of pristine coastline without a soul in sight as far as the eye can see, just begging to be explored. The biggest draw card of the lodge is the quick and easy access to world-class fishing – everything is right on your doorstep.
For the nature lover there is an abundance of wildlife in the area – monkeys that hunt ghost crabs on the beaches, hundreds of flamingos, whale sharks, dolphins that come right into the shallow lagoon to teach their young to hunt and big game in the reserve across the lagoon.
The lodge
The lodge is constructed from quality local hard woods and is well and practically built. Each chalet has its own wooden balcony with views out over the lagoon. The main bar / dining area faces both west out over the large estuary mouth, and east over the sea and endless beach. One can stroll less than 50 meters and be fishing for tailing grunter and river snapper in the estuary, or walk 100 meters the other way and be catching GT’s, kingfish and bonefish in the surf! By boat, world-class offshore fishing exists within 15 minutes of the lodge.
Other activities include SCUBA diving, snorkelling trips, sunset cruises, beach picnics, walking, swimming and whale / dolphin watching.
Boats & guides
Liquid Horizon has teamed up legendary guide Guy Ferguson, and some of the best fishing guides in Mozambique. These specialist fly fishing guides are superb all round fishermen, and know the area intimately. The boats are perfectly suited 18 – 23ft walk around catamarans, offering comfort and practicality for all angling disciplines. In terms of fishing, safety and experience, you could not be in better hands.
The fishing
The beauty of Nyati Lodge is its exclusivity and the fact that there is a huge variety of different fishing options to suit every style of angling. There is also always fishing available in all but the worst weather. The estuary, surf and beach fishing is right on your doorstep, and the offshore reefs and blue water are ridiculously close by – literally within 15 minutes of leaving the lodge you can be catching sailfish!
Estuary, rock and surf
Starting right in front of the restaurant, the lodge has access to endless surf fishing and some wonderful reefs that extend out into the surf and are accessible on foot. The various sand points in the mouth of the estuary allow access to deep water channels and offer some spectacular shore based fishing. Right in front of the lodge great fun can be had targeting river snapper, smaller trevally and tailing grunter on light tackle and fly, and this also an excellent alternative during bad weather.
Offshore
There is absolutely red-hot fishing on the dropping tide right behind the backline at the mouth of the estuary in 5 – 10 meters of water. Lots of king mackerel, queen mackerel, yellow spot kingfish, queenfish and bonito congregate here, especially in the late afternoons and the fishing is red hot and super consistent.
5 minutes from here one can be fishing on a multitude of deep reefs and pinnacles, or be catching sailfish on the drop offs. Everything is really close by meaning lots more fishing time, and lots less fuel!
Going north one has the option of the reefs and blue water fishing around Margaruque and Bangwe Islands, and going south there are endless reefs for deep water fly fishing / jigging, throwing flies or poppers over shallow reefs teaming with kingfish, or trolling for billfish. Sailfish, dorado, king mackerel, wahoo and tuna can all be regularly caught by trolling or teasing up fish and casting a fly to them.
The offshore fishing to visible fish feeding on the surface in this area is very good and there are many species available. GT’s, trevally species, king mackerel, queen mackerel, queenfish, jobfish, Indian mirror fish and tuna species are all there in good numbers. Big GT’s and king mackerel are abundant, and anglers will connect with some real trophies.
