Over the past 10 years Alphonse Island has built a reputation as a truly dynamic fishery, and arguably the best bonefishing destination known to man. Yet it is not only the vast numbers of the "grey ghosts" that make these atolls so remarkable, but the huge numbers variety of other highly sought after species that can be targeted on fly in shallow water. The entire atoll is alive with fish and marine life, giving those fortunate enough to visit a first hand taste of what the environment must have been like a few hundred years ago. If there is only one destination you visit in your lifetime, this should be it!
Broken coral reefs protect thousands of acres of solid, wadable white sand flats that hold huge schools of bonefish and milkfish, and pods of the illusive African permit. The jagged reef edges are patrolled by ferocious bluefin and giant trevally, and in the inner lagoon colourful, charismatic triggerfish forage on the coral finger flats. Under the right conditions schools of big, super strong milkfish boil and splash on the surface as they suck in the algae that has been scoured and flushed off the flats. Just a few hundred yards offshore, blue water species such as sailfish, wahoo, yellowfin and dogtooth tuna abound. Closer inshore, an endless array of snapper, emperors, wrasses and jobfish inhabit the numerous coral reefs, providing consistent sport for anglers of all abilities.
Accommodation and dining is first class at Alphonse Island Resort, and the fishing is fully guided by professional guides. The daily fishing takes place on nearby St Francois atoll, a short boat ride from Alphonse. The fishing operation has sole rights to the flats at St Francois Island, and with a maximum of only 10 rods allowed on more than 12 000 acres of pristine flats, exclusivity is guaranteed.
Liquid Horizon owner and guide Graeme Field, spent three seasons guiding full time on this magnificent atoll and rates it as the best he has ever experienced: "This is a truly wild and unspoilt destination that harbours huge numbers of trophy fish, and is one of those places that just has to be visited at least once in your lifetime!"
