Rio Azul lodge boasts a great variety of fishing - estuary, inshore & offshore. It is situated on the mainland at built at the mouth of the Govuro River, right on an extensive mangrove waterway system. It also lies directly opposite 25 Mile Reef off the northern point of Bazaruto Island, which means access to arguably the best offshore fishing in the whole of Mozambique.
The lodge
The lodge is beautifully constructed from quality local hard woods and exquisitely crafted down the finest detail. It faces west out over the large estuary mouth, is sheltered from the wind and enjoys spectacular Mozambican sunsets. Each chalet has its own wooden balcony with views out over the lagoon.
The fishing
The beauty of Rio Azul Lodge is that there are a variety of different fishing options to suit every style of angling - mainly fly fishing, spinning, jigging. The offshore fishing around the reefs and to visible fish feeding on the surface in this area is very good and there are many species available. GT's, trevally species, king mackerel, queen mackerel, queenfish, jobfish, Indian mirror fish and tuna species are all there in good numbers. Big GT's and king mackerel are abundant, and if you preserve you will connect with a real trophy. Sailfish, dorado, king mackerel, wahoo and tuna can all be regularly caught by trolling or teasing up fish and casting a fly to them.
The lodge provides each chalet with an aluminium river boat with 15hp engine and electric motor for fishing the mangrove lined estuary. Great fun can be had targeting river snapper, river perch, smaller trevally and grunter on light tackle and fly, and this also an excellent alternative during bad weather.
A number of excellent shore based fishing opportunities exist, with access to very deep water at the mouth of the river and nearby BD Islands. Trevally, queenfish and king mackerel are the main targets, and some really big fish have been landed here on spinning gear and fly tackle.
