It is not often that one comes across a venue so unique and beautiful that it simply speaks for itself. Fizantakraal Trout Lodge is such a place. Set amongst dramatic mountain scenery in the Du Toits Kloof mountains, this elegant and totally private lodge offers an indulgent experience incorporating natural splendour, fantastic fly fishing and decadent cuisine.

The lodge looks down the Kraalstroom Valley from the elevated back deck, and onto four picturesque dams nestled into the valley across the rolling front lawns. In addition to the dams, two pristine wild trout streams run through the farm, both offering wonderful fly fishing.

The local Cape fynbos vegetation is exceptional, and home to an array of birds and a number of wild Cape Mountain leopards. Nature lovers, fly fisherman, bird watchers and hikers will be thrilled by this unique mountain hideaway. The venue is fully catered by on site chefs, and best suited to groups of 6 – 8 people.

The Farm

The farm covers 1400 hectares of pristine Cape Mountain fynbos, which is inhabited by an array of birdlife and other wildlife such as antelope, chachma baboons, honey badgers and wild cats. Wild Cape mountain leopards frequent the farm, and there are a number of hidden cameras on the farm with motion detectors that capture many photographs of these endangered leopards.

The farm will soon be incorporated into the Cape Leopard Project, which aims to establish an accurate record of the current leopard population in the Western Cape and educate the general public with regards to the preservation of these magnificent animals.

Bird enthusiasts exploring the mountain fynbos on the farm may be rewarded with sightings of a few rare Cape endemic bird species such as the Protea canary, orange breasted sunbird, Cape siskin and ground woodpecker as well as the more common and highly vociferous Cape sugarbirds, malachite sunbirds and spur fowl.

There are a number of hiking routes on the farm ranging from gentle routes along jeep-tracks to trails following the routes of the farm’s flower pickers for the more adventurous hikers. Tours of the trout hatchery are also available.

The Lodge

The lodge is simply stunning. Elegant and beautifully constructed, it boasts spacious and welcoming living areas, a large country style kitchen, four large en-suite bedrooms, all the mod cons and a massive outside deck and infinity pool that is built right out over the rugged valley below.

The lodge is totally exclusive so that guests can enjoy the entire place to themselves. The indulgent, gourmet meals are prepared and served daily by private chefs, and guests of the lodge are in for a real treat in this regard.

The fishing

The Elandspad, Smalblaar and Kraalstroom rivers flow through the farm, all three of which are well known for their cool clear waters that support healthy populations of wild rainbow trout. The Kraalstroom is the gem of these three rivers and is the spawning ground for the wild rainbow trout that then move down to populate the Elandspad and other well-known Western Cape Trout streams.

It is this beautiful little river and its feeder streams that also provide the cool clear water in the dams around the Fizantakraal lodge. These four dams are home to large rainbow trout that, having been born and bred on the farm, are in immaculate condition and make a highly valued prize for any keen fly fisherman.

Fizanatkraal Lodge offers a secluded, totally private and luxurious holiday, with a high standard of service, gourmet meals and wonderful fishing. Treat yourself!
