Less than an hour's drive from the centre of Cape Town, lie the Western Cape's best keep fly fishing secrets – the magical Cape streams. Stunningly clear freestone trout streams tumble from majestic peaks, through rugged valleys, and down narrow gorges. They all hold healthy populations of wild rainbow and brown trout, as well as a variety of small and sometimes rare indigenous fish. The trout are feisty and hardy fish that readily rise to feed off the surface. The opportunity to sight cast at visible fish with tiny dry flies and light tippets make these supremely clear streams a dry fly fisherman's paradise. Fishing the Cape streams is a wonderfully scenic and enjoyable day out and the fly fishing is world-class.
There are six rivers in total and all are governed by a strict catch-and-release policy. The streams vary dramatically in size, shape, accessibility and surrounding scenery. Lined with shrubs and bush, and beautiful indigenous "fynbos", and offering glimpses of wild buck and small deer, baboons, monkeys and reasonable bird life, a day out on these magnificent streams is about more than just fishing - it's a chance to escape into the wilderness and enjoy nature at its absolute finest. The terrain is quite rugged and some degree of fitness is required.
Liquid Horizon offers fully guided trips with experienced local fly fishing guides to these beautiful trout streams during the Cape summer months.
Please note that the Cape Streams are closed from 31 May to 01 September each year.
